PowerQuest's (now owned by Symantec) Drive Image SE allowed Compaq to create a sector-by-sector compressed image of the original factory state of a hard drive (on the hard drive or on a CD) and also allowed end-users to create their own user image  so that in the event of system corruption or data corruption they didn't lose their data, application loads and system preferences that they added since the purchase of their computer system.

Compaq sold over 6 million computers  a year configured with PowerQuest's image recovery tools for several years.  PowerQuest gave Compaq just a small subset of its Drive Image and Partition Magic code to Compaq and made $Millions on this deal at just 25 cents per unit royalty.
